Robert Kean established Hedgehog Nursery Landscape, Design and Construction in Glenrothes, Scotland in 1990. The workload had been varied mainly between commercial design and landscape management contracts, private contemporary garden design and construction with additional consultancy work for environmental landscape management and landscape assessment.

Robert has been a landscape architect for 25 years initially beginning his career with the local authority creating areas of landscaping and parks for the 'new' town of Glenrothes that set it apart from traditional towns.

Today, as a result, the town boasts parks and landscaping recognised at national level as being outstanding, winning multiple awards in the "Beautiful Scotland" contest.

In 1974 having finished his involvement with the local authority Robert found himself on a plane travelling to possibly one of the most remote places in the world, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, to engage in the Landscape design of the King Fahad International Airport in Riyadh. And for the next 15 years, Robert remained in Saudi Arabia involved in design of both hard and soft landscape as well as project management, taking schemes from the design process to implementation. He also had the opportunity to expand his expertise to include desert horticulture and irrigation.

After returning to Scotland and forming a landscape company in 1990 along with a wholesale plant nursery in his back garden, it became clear that a much bigger place was needed. In 1994 Robert purchased a four-acre derelict industrial site (a former bomb factory) in the south of the city and Hedgehogs Nursery and Garden Centre was created as well as a Landscape Design and Construction company

In 2006 Robert decided to close the Construction side of the landscape business and focus on landscape design and e-commerce which has been growing and growing. Robert still continues to design gardens - that has always been his passion – 'creating that special place' and he loves to have his mobile phone ring.
